Here you will find gift ideas and tips to help you select the perfect cat-inspired brooch, whether the gift is for yourself or for your cat-loving friends.

Brooches, brooches...

Brooches have become very popular fashion accessories, and they come in a variety of materials and prices. You can find a wide array of styles: from simple and elegant items to modern and eccentric pieces.

Despite their current popularity, these pieces have been around for quite some time. The earliest known brooches (a brooch was called fibula in ancient times – fibulae being the plural word) have been traced back to the Bronze Age. These pieces were used by the Ancient Greeks, Ethruscans and Romans. Basically, people in Ancient times used them as a sort of safety pin. These pieces were particularly used by the Romans to secure their long garments, or togas.

A cat brooch or a cat pin?

According to The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, a brooch is “a relatively large decorative pin or clasp.” So, basically, the main difference between pins and brooches is that brooches are considerably larger than regular pins.

Some people like the understated style of a small pin. Others, however, favor bolder pieces, pieces with a punch. And a brooch might give them just that. As you’ll see below, these pieces come in an ample assortment of styles, sizes, colors, and materials – so you will find something to please almost everyone.

Gift ideas

If you want to give a cat brooch as a present but don’t know where to begin, take heart. Here are some ideas and suggestions to help you in your search:

--Style: Before you buy any cat brooch for you or your friends, consider the style or design of the brooch you want to acquire. If the gift is for you, then take into account your own wardrobe and see how the brooch will fit in. If the gift is for your cat-loving friends, then consider their particular taste. You can find pieces that go from the plain and simple, to the elegant and sophisticated. You can also find cat brooches encrusted with semi-precious and/or precious stones.

--Unique pieces: For that special cat lover, consider an out-of-the-ordinary piece. You can find, for example, crystal, ethnic-inspired, beaded, and funky cat brooches.

--Materials: Brooches come in a wide range of materials: from the traditional gold, silver, copper and pewter, to less common materials such as wire, marcasite, glass, even wood.

--If you are crafty and want to give a truly original present, then consider making it yourself. Visit any craft or jewelry-supply store where you will find everything you need to make your very own brooch. There are several websites that give you examples and instructions to help you create your own pieces.
